Agribusiness TV, the first youth in agribusiness web TV in Africa, was officially launched on 5th May 2016 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Despite being a public holiday, the room was packed with over 120 people, who attended the event. At 16:00, everything was set and the MC kicked off the launch ceremony. On the programme, there was the project presentation by Inoussa Maiga, Project Manager of Agribusiness TV, followed by video projections on some successful young agripreneurs, testimonial from a young entrepreneur from Burkina Faso present at the ceremony, and messages from the special guests, Mr. Paul Taryam Ilboudo, President of the Agro-Pastoral and Services Society (SAPAS), and Mr. Remis Fulgance Dandjinou, Minister of communication of Burkina Faso.

Agribusiness TV to inspire youth and inform policy makers

From the presentation of the project, the message was clear. We need to change the way we look at agriculture and show the positive sides of what the sector can bring to young people as employment opportunities. There are many young people who are doing great things in agriculture, all along the value chain, and this is what Agribusiness TV wants to bring forward, so as to inspire youth and also inform stakeholders and policy makers on realities on the ground that are not often shown or talked about in the news.

On his side, Mr. Paul Taryam Ilboudo, stressed on the fact that it is good to have agricultural schools and training programmes for young people, but what can all these serve, if there are no provisions made for accompanying the youth in establishing their business (mainly access to land and finance) after the trainings? Mr. Ilboudo describes this situation as “a building without a roof”, which is not useful, until the roof is placed. There is a real need put policies into place and create a favourable environment that encourages young people to become entrepreneurs, and stop running after government jobs.

Mr. Remis Fulgance Dandjinou, the Minister of communication of Burkina Faso was also of the opinion that the government cannot employ all the young people in the country, but according to him, the different ministries are here to welcome their ideas and innovations and see what type of support they can provide. The Minister welcomed favourably the idea of Agribusiness TV, and his presence that the official launch definitely showed his support. He officially launched the project and encouraged the people present to download the application on their smartphones.
